Build a small Wi-Fi sensor or Bluetooth LE project without making the controller larger than the thing it controls. The Seeed Studio XIAO ESP32-C3 combines a single-core RISC-V processor, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and BLE in the compact XIAO format. It is a practical starting point for connected sensors, wearables and custom carrier boards.
Key Highlights
- Connected projects: Wi-Fi and Bluetooth LE on one board, with an external antenna included.
- Room for peripherals: 11 digital I/O with PWM, plus UART, I²C and SPI for your sensors and displays.
- Battery-powered builds: onboard lithium-battery charging supports portable projects. Follow the battery wiring guidance rather than improvising the polarity.
- Arduino setup: Seeed's guide covers the board package, pin map and a first Blink program.
Which XIAO ESP32 should I choose?
- XIAO ESP32-C3: single-core Wi-Fi and Bluetooth LE for compact connected projects.
- XIAO ESP32-C6: choose this when your project needs Thread or Zigbee alongside Wi-Fi 6.
- XIAO ESP32-S3: dual-core processing with 8 MB PSRAM and 8 MB Flash for larger applications.
These are programmable development boards, not ready-configured smart-home appliances. Check your chosen firmware and peripherals before buying.
Specifications and pin access
- Processor: ESP32-C3, 32-bit single-core RISC-V, up to 160 MHz
- Memory: 400 KB SRAM and 4 MB Flash
- Wireless: 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth LE 5.0
- I/O: 11 digital GPIO/PWM and four ADC-capable pins; functions share pins
- Interfaces: UART, I²C and SPI
- Controls: Reset and Boot buttons
- Power: USB Type-C or a suitable 3.7 V rechargeable lithium battery using the documented battery pads
For reliable analogue readings, Seeed recommends ADC1 pins A0, A1 and A2 rather than A3/ADC2. Check the pin map before allocating peripherals.
Getting Started
Use Seeed's XIAO ESP32-C3 setup guide and pin map for Arduino installation, antenna connection and battery wiring. Programming needs a USB-C data cable; a charge-only cable will not do the job.
Included and Optional
One XIAO ESP32-C3 board with an external antenna. This is not a pre-soldered-header version. The 2.4 GHz rod antenna is an optional alternative, not a requirement to make the supplied board wireless.
Before You Build
Expansion boards, sensors and batteries are separate project choices. Match their wiring and electrical requirements to the board documentation; the XIAO footprint is small, but the pinout still deserves a look.
