A hand-carved Guro mask from the Ivory Coast. The Guro (or Gouro) are a deeply spiritual people, and masks like this often represent Gu, wife of the supernatural being Zamble — the horns standing for spiritual power and protection. Guro masks blend human, animal and fantastical elements, frequently incorporating birds such as the hornbill, and are still danced today at funerals, weddings and other ceremonies.
