Product Description

Product Description

Our Refined Cupuaçu Butter is a cold-pressed, non-hydrogenated butter from the seeds of the cupuacu tree (Theobroma grandiflorum), a tropical plant from the Amazon rainforest and a cacao relative. The cupuacu tree is known for its big oval fruits, whose seeds produce a very nourishing butter used for its cosmetic versatility. Cupuaçu butter has a creamy, light beige colour and a subtle, pleasant aroma like white chocolate, so it has a fragrant yet delicate scent. The refined butter has almost no odour, perfect for sensitive skin and DIY formulations where fragrance neutrality is required. It has a semi-solid triglyceride texture, which contributes to its natural emollient and moisturising properties. It melts and penetrates the skin quickly, absorbs easily and leaves a soft, silky finish. Known for its high moisture retention capacity, it helps to replenish the skin’s hydration barrier, so it’s great for dry, flaky or rough skin.

Rich in phytosterols, antioxidants and essential fatty acids, this butter conditions the skin and improves texture. It’s often compared to cocoa butter as both butters come from the same family of Amazonian trees, but Cupuaçu butter is lighter and less greasy, so it’s a preferred alternative in many modern skincare formulations.

During production, the final product is a creamy, nourishing butter ready to use in various formulations. Cupuaçu butter is suitable for all skin and hair types, so it’s great for body butter and hair care products like masks and conditioners.

Because Cupuaçu butter is sustainable and eco-friendly, its use supports rainforest preservation and ethical sourcing. The seeds are obtained as a by-product of the fruit pulp industry, so there’s minimal waste and maximum benefit to local communities.

Cupuaçu Butter Origins, Extraction and Production

Cupuaçu Butter Origins

The Cupuaçu tree (Theobroma grandiflorum) is native to the Amazon basin and plays an important role in the region’s biodiversity. A relative of the cacao tree, it produces big, oval and heavy fruits with a rich pulp surrounding the seeds.

Traditionally, Amazonian communities used the pulp for food and the seeds for butter extraction. Today, butter is widely used in cosmetics for moisturising, protecting and softening the skin. Sustainable harvesting helps to maintain rainforest ecosystems by ensuring seeds are collected only from approved, legal developments and not from conservation areas.

Cupuaçu Butter Extraction and Production

Cupuaçu butter is extracted from the seeds of the Cupuaçu tree using a cold-pressing process that preserves its natural ingredients and moisturising properties.

This gentle process uses mechanical pressure instead of heat or chemicals, so the butter retains all its active ingredients, including essential fatty acids like palmitic acid and stearic acid. These are the key to the butter’s emollient properties, locking in moisture and softening the skin.

The cold-pressing process also helps to maintain the butter’s creamy texture and subtle aroma, so it’s perfect for use in many cosmetic formulations. To protect the integrity of its active ingredients and extend its shelf life, cupuaçu butter should be stored in a cool, dark place. Proper storage not only prevents the breakdown of beneficial compounds but also prevents the formation of free radical scavengers, so the butter remains fresh and effective for longer. This careful production and storage are crucial for delivering a high-quality butter that gives maximum benefits to skin and hair.

Comparison with Other Butters

Comparison with Other Butters

Cupuaçu butter stands out among natural butters like shea butter, mango butter and cocoa butter due to its unique combination of moisturising properties and skin benefits. While all these butters nourish and protect, cupuaçu butter has a different fatty acid profile and high water absorption capacity. So it’s an excellent substitute in skin care products, especially for those looking to increase skin hydration and support the skin’s natural humidity.

Compared to shea butter, cupuaçu butter has a softer, creamier texture and a more pronounced moisturising effect, so it’s great for dry, chapped or irritated skin. Its lightweight feel and ability to penetrate the skin quickly set it apart from heavier butters like cocoa butter, which can leave a greasy residue. In hair care, cupuaçu butter is often blended with natural oils like coconut oil and sweet almond oil to create intense nourishing treatments for dry or damaged hair. Its compatibility with other butters and oils allows formulators to create products that deliver intense hydration and restore vitality to both skin and hair.

How to use it

How to use it

Skin Care

  • Mature, crêpey and dry skin will all benefit greatly from using Cupuaçu Butter. It has amazing levels of water absorption, which transfers to the skin to make it intensely hydrating. This makes the skin more flexible and elastic.
  • Dry and cracked skin becomes softer almost immediately, so use it in foot creams and especially in heel balms.
  • The ability of Cupuaçu Butter to penetrate the skin quickly and retain moisture there is very desirable in men’s grooming products. This quick absorption also helps other ingredients to penetrate the skin faster as well.
  • This skin hydration and penetration is far superior to Shea Butter. Shea Butter has other beneficial qualities that work well together with Cupuaçu Butter.
  • Cupuaçu Butter is also rich in phytosterols, which benefit dry and damaged skin. The fatty acid content is very protective for the skin, and, as an antioxidant, it helps to protect against free radical damage.
  • It does absorb UVA and UVB rays, but this should be considered as a bonus for use in daily defence creams and lotions. It should not be considered as an SPF, as it does not offer enough protection to be classified as such.
  • It is a good plant alternative to lanolin, as it attracts more water, which makes it a far superior skin hydrator to lanolin. For this reason, it is excellent to use in lip balms and baby / nappy products. This ability to hold water is useful as a stabiliser in emulsions.
  • Very nourishing when combined with an exfoliant to use in a face or body scrub.

Hair Care

  • Very nourishing and protective to hair, especially dry and brittle hair. Over-processed hair can be restored by its deeply hydrating properties, which promote a healthy shine.
  • With long hair, combing and brushing will be easier after using Cupuaçu Butter in your products.
  • It is excellent to use in a hair serum to tame frizzy hair after it has just been washed.
