A hand-carved Bwa mask from the Burkina Faso and Mali region of West Africa. The Bwa make two kinds of mask — one from leaves and one from wood — both representing the natural world, their surfaces covered in abstract, geometric patterns.
In performance, masks like this embody nature or ancestor spirits believed to interact with people and shape their lives. This example is carved with three figures holding hands. A beautiful handmade piece, supplied on a stand.
