The 2023 vintage in the Alentejo began with a dry winter. Mild spring weather provided good conditions for budbreak and flowering. Three heatwaves during the summer meant that meticulous attention to detail was required in the vineyards to help the vines withstand the heat and drought: careful canopy management, control of cover crops to prevent competition with the vines, selective irrigation, and green harvesting to reduce the vines’ load and prevent excessive stress. The harvest at Herdade do Peso began on 9th August and ended on 30th September. Luís Cabral de Almeida was delighted with the quality of the grapes. The smaller berries, due to the lack of water throughout the growing season, produced wines with great concentration of flavour and structure.
Upon arrival at the winery, the grapes were destemmed and underwent a soft crushing followed by a 3-4 day maceration. Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks, lasting eight days, at a controlled temperature of 26ºC and with gentle pumping over. After malolactic fermentation, the wine was racked off the skins and aged for six months in stainless steel. It underwent a light filtration before bottling.
